Q: I live in a new house that is only a few years old, and I’m having to fix some settling cracks in my ceiling. The problem is that my ceiling has a textured pattern that I can’t imitate. How do I fix this? A: Textured spray in a can will often do the trick. However, after a bit of experimenting, if you cannot create a matching finish you may want to contact the original builder to find out who performed the finish work. Hiring a professional to make the repairs and re-do the texture may be the only answer. While it may seem like an unnecessary expense, a matching finish is key in helping to maintain the quality and value of your home. Q: I have an old tar-and-gravel roof that I am getting re-done. My contractor is suggesting a ``Modified Bitteman’’ roof. What is this? A: Modified bitumen roofing is made of asphalt that has been modified with polyester. A conventional tar and gravel roof can tear as it expands and contracts with changes in climate and temperature. Modified bitumen is far more flexible and therefore less likely to crack or tear. There’s a single-ply version, but you will be much better of with more than a single layer. Q. What can I use to clean goop and junk off of my maple kitchen cabinets? A. We have a formula you can put together yourself that will do the trick. You’ll need the following ingredients and supplies (turpentine and linseed oil can both be purchased at a paint store): 1 empty and clean coffee can 1 quart of water 3 Tablespoons turpentine (not paint thinner) 3 Tablespoons boiled linseed oil (it comes pre-boiled) Use rubber gloves, eye protection, and make sure to have plenty of ventilation when doing this project. First, boil the water and pour it into the coffee can. Next, add the turpentine and boiled linseed oil and thoroughly mix the ingredients. Dip a clean soft cloth into the mixture and thoroughly wring it out. Clean small areas at a time and immediately wipe dry with a clean, white soft cloth. CAUTION: Do not reheat this product _ it is very flammable. If the solution cools down, simply make a new batch. |
